Laser Safety¶
All JS-50 models operate with visible laser light at 660nm (visible red). Depending on the model (see datasheet) either 50mW or 100mW laser diodes are used.
All JS-50 models adhere to Laser Class 3R.
Laser Class 3R Safety
A Class 3R laser is considered safe if handled carefully, with restricted beam viewing. With a class 3R laser, the MPE (Maximum Permissible Exposure) can be exceeded, but with a low risk of injury. Visible continuous lasers in Class 3R are limited to 5 mW1. For other wavelengths and for pulsed lasers, other limits apply.
Hardware Markings¶
All JS-50 models are equipped with warning signs next to the laser aperture(s).2
Protective Eyewear¶
In the US, guidance for the usage of protective eyewear is given in the ANSI Z136 series of standards, in the European Community the standard EN 207 applies.
In general, JoeScan recommend the usage of protective eyewear only during system installation and alignment. In normal operation, at viewing distances over 3ft, there is virtually no risk of eye injury, given the natural blink reflex.
Hardware Lockout¶
The JS-50 models do not have a hardware lockout, as the laser is controlled solely by the firmware. The laser will only be switched on in active scanning mode, i.e. after a configuration has been set and a StartScanning
command has been issued. Removing power to the PoE Switch will power down all ScanHeads.

the laser diodes in JS-50 are a) pulsed and b) equipped with a line generation optic, spreading the power over the length of the line. The classification as 3R is thus valid. ↩

For units mounted in such a way that the warning sign is obscured from the operator, please contact JoeScan and we will supply you with additional stickers. ↩
